Now is the time to fight against cuts to ALS research by advocating and by supporting events like Wings Over Wall Street.  Sponsors are needed for our October 26, 2017 Gala. A Big Night With Mr. Wonderful

One of the most impressive auction items of Wings Over Wall Street's 2016 Gala was the opportunity to have dinner with Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary. The auction was held online and a computer was on hand at the Wings Gala so bidders at the event could join in. While it started off slow, the bidding took off and Wings benefitted from an unbelievable winning bid of $34,000.

What is even more unbelieveable is that the winning bidder was Alex Edson, the18-year old CEO of Power TV. Alex, who was happy to support Wings and its mission to unlock the cure for ALS, also was hoping to land Kevin as a strategic partner. We don't know the outcome, but they had a great dinner at Ocean Prime recently and both enjoyed the experience. Special thanks to Wings Chair Jon Najarian for making it happen.

AFA-CWA Supports Wings 2016

2016 Wings Over Wall Street - October 27, 2016
AFA Members, Toni Diamond and Warren Schiffer, became founders of the extraordinary benefit, "Wings Over Wall Street" when Toni was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.  They turned their greatest challenge into inspiring work to fight ALS through research funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  In 2004 we lost Toni, our flying partner, but her care-giver husband, Warren, continues to work in her memory.

This year the benefit is scheduled for October 27, 2016 from 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm at The Lighthouse, Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers in New York City.

A Note from Warren
To my fellow Flight Attendants,

As we embark on unifying our ranks and standing together as one group with shared aspirations for a professional, prosperous, and safety oriented future, I am really excited to see how great our combined efforts can positively impact our careers going forward.

Standing together as one, with passion and commitment, is what Wings has been focused on. I am humbled and so proud to have the opportunity to tell you about the upcoming 16 Annual MDA'S Wings Over Wall Street Gala event, which takes place October 27th, 2016 at The Lighthouse - Pier Sixty-One - Chelsea Piers in NYC.

This year, our goal is to Unlock the Cure for ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  Why am I involved with ALS?  For those who don’t know, my late wife, and United Flight Attendant, Toni Diamond, was diagnosed and later died from this horrible disease.  She and I cofounded MDA'S Wings Over Wall Street in 2001 as a way to fund ALS research, which still remains underfunded today.  Over the last 15 years, with the support of our United family, Wings has raised almost $11 million for ALS research.

Frankly, I never thought that 16 years later I would need to come back to you asking for help. The reality is that people are still dying every day from ALS, and, while significant progress has been made, we still have more work to do to Unlock The Cure for ALS. I am confident that with your support, we will achieve Toni’s dream of a world without ALS.  She knew that she wouldn’t be around to see it, but that she could count on me to continue her fight after she was gone.  I knew that her fellow Flight Attendants wouldn’t let her down either.

Finally, if you are going to be in NY on 10/27, but are unable to purchase a ticket, I invite you to become a Wings volunteer for the night. You'll need to be available from approximately 4 PM - 10 PM. It would be greatly appreciated and I know you'll have a great night. Please contact Alyssa Keenan akeenan@mdausa.org.

Thank you for considering this request, and fly safely.

Gratefully yours,
Warren Schiffer, EWRSW

Founder of Ride4Life Provides a Motivating Essay

Anniversary of Hope

Chris Pendergast, ALS Patient
Ride For Life Founder & President

Hope is the most powerful force we possess. With it mountains are moved and miracles are realized. I once read, “Hope will never leave you, it is you that will abandon it!”

On Columbus Day, I received the long awaited telephone call from my doctor who delivered the devastating diagnosis. I plunged into a dark, frightening world. Medicine offered nothing. The prognosis was bone chillingly grim. The advice given to me, “Put your life in order.”  Sound advice according to most since ALS is considered hopeless. Patients are expected to die within a few years of diagnosis.

I turned to my family, my friends and my faith. They were my reservoir of strength. Quietly, I held fast to a glimmering feeling deep within me. I hoped. There was no plan, or expectation. I had no vision of the future.  I did not expect a cure. All I had was an indefinable but unshakeable sense of hope. Though afraid, I took each day as it came and considered it a gift. Eight thousand, three hundred and ninety five days later, each day continues to be a gift.

Tuesday begins my 24th year of living with ALS. I celebrated my anniversary of living with good friends , delicious food and a glorious setting at the Cowfish restaurant on Shinnecock Bay. Life poses great challenges but is precious and worth living, even with the struggle.  Although now 67 and quite disabled, I continue to hope, for God is indeed good.

I hope for my wife.  I hope for my children and grandchild. I hope for patients newly diagnosed. I hope for the dedicated researchers.

Also, I hope for all of you who read this. Remember, it is people who abandon hope. It will never abandon you. It has been at my side this whole remarkable  journey.
